WinZip (your one program for easy compression)

*  How do you start WinZip?

To compress files and folders do the following steps:

 

1)      Press Start

 

2)      Go to Programs>WinZip>WinZip 8.1

 

What is WinZip?

WinZip is a file compression utility meaning that it can take a big file or folder and make it smaller in size so that it can fit for example onto a floppy diskette. Remember a floppy can only hold 1.44MB so take that into consideration when your about to compress. When you start WinZip a screen should pop up like this:

This is the main screen sometimes another screen may pop up and this screen is usually the wizard and looks like this:

 

Option two

 

 

The difference between the two is really has to do with your preference. If you feel comfortable with using compressed files and folders option one is suitable for you.

 

How do you compress files and folders?

 

Let’s start by using the program as you can see in diagram 1-1. As you can see you have the WinZip on the top right corner. And then you have options such as:

File>Actions>Options>Help

And you also have:

New>Open>Favorites>Add>Extract>View>CheckOut>Wizard

When you start WinZip the:

Add>Extract>View>and CheckOut are grayed out the only things that you can use is:

New>Open>Favorites and Wizard

Then you also have on the toolbar:

File>Actions>Options>and Help

To compress and file or folder go to:

 

File>New Archive…

 

 

 

This dialogue box should open. Choose Save in and choose desktop. Type the name of the file that you want where it says File name: and press OK.


The WinZip should make a file called (whatever you named it).zip

 

Let’s go now to option two:

 

 

When you get this dialogue box click Next another dialogue box should follow it looking like this:

 

 

Once you get to this screen you have two options:

1)      Search Entire hard Disk [recommended]

2)      Quick Search [faster]

 

Click Next

 

Another screen will pop up looking like this:

 

 

At this screen you can choose from any of the above options Let’s do option one click on Next

You should get a dialogue box like this:

At this prompt choose which file you want to zip once you find it click Next and you should come up with this screen:

 

 

When you come to this dialogue box if you still want to change the directory you can do that if not the click on Unzip Now. The WinZip will unzip your folder to the destination that you want it to go to.

 

Now let’s go to option two in the Wizard:

 

 Click on Next

Then another screen will pop up looking like this:

 

Click on the file you want and click Next.

 

Another dialogue box will open looking like this:

 

 

Click on either the add files (if you want to add files to your zip file) or click on Add folders (if you want to add a folder) but for sake of argument let’s choose to add files.

 

A dialogue box should appear like this:

 

 

Go into the folder that you want for example My Pictures

Another dialogue box should open looking like this:

 

Let’s select the file you want and click OK

 

Another dialogue box should open looking like this:

 

 

Click on Zip Now

 

Now, let’s go to option three:

 

 

Click Next

Another dialogue box should open looking like this:

 

 

Click on Browse and another dialogue box should open looking like this:

 

 

Click on the folder or file that you want to Zip let’s do My Pictures as an example and do OK another dialogue box should open looking like this:

 

Type out the file name you want it to be and click OK

 

You should get another dialogue box like this:

 

 

Click on Next

Another dialogue box should appear looking like this:

 

Click on Zip Now and your done
